Quick answer: The google analytics certification is Google’s free online exam on Skillshop, valid for 12 months. It proves someone knows GA4 concepts and terminology. It does not prove they can set up measurement for your business, so treat it as a baseline filter and test practical skills before you hire.
The google analytics certification appears on a lot of CVs in Singapore. Marketing executive applications list it, freelancer profiles show the badge, and agency pitch decks put it on a slide. For an SME owner or hiring manager who does not use Google Analytics daily, it looks like a reassuring stamp: this person knows analytics.
It is a useful stamp, but a narrow one. The exam checks that someone understands how Google Analytics 4 (GA4, Google’s current free website analytics tool) works and what its terms mean. It does not check whether they can make GA4 count your enquiries, connect it to your website through a tag manager, handle consent banners, or explain what the numbers mean for your business.
This piece is written for the person doing the hiring. It explains what the certificate actually covers, how to verify one in a minute, which practical questions separate real skill from exam recall, and, for candidates reading this, how to pass it. Our conclusion is simple: use the certificate as a literacy filter, then ask the candidate to walk through a real GA4 property and explain how they would track your enquiries. If you are hiring because search performance is the real goal, our SEO services overview shows where measurement sits in that work.
The Google Analytics Certification is an online assessment run by Google on Skillshop, Google’s official training platform for its advertising and analytics products. It replaced the older Google Analytics Individual Qualification (often shortened to GAIQ), which tested the retired Universal Analytics. Today the exam is built around GA4.
A few facts are worth knowing before you put any weight on it:
Two things follow for an employer. First, because retakes are unlimited and the exam is open-book in practice (nothing stops someone keeping GA4 help pages open), a pass shows familiarity, not mastery. Second, the 12-month validity is a genuine signal. Someone who has renewed it several years in a row has kept up with a tool that changes its menus and terminology often, such as Google renaming “conversions” to key events (actions you mark as important, like a form submission) in 2024.
In our experience, the most useful thing the certificate tells you is that the candidate has put in a few focused hours learning the vocabulary. That matters, because a marketer who does not know the difference between a user, a session and an event will struggle to read any report. It is the floor, not the ceiling.
The certification is aligned with Google’s own GA4 learning path on Skillshop. Broadly, the questions cover:
That is a reasonable foundation. The gap is everything that happens outside GA4’s own interface, which is where most real tracking problems live.
Google Tag Manager. Google Tag Manager (GTM, a free tool for adding tracking code to a site without editing the site each time) is how most businesses track button clicks, form submits and WhatsApp taps. The certification barely touches it. A certified candidate may never have built a trigger.
Consent and privacy. The exam does not teach Singapore’s PDPA (Personal Data Protection Act) or how cookie banners interact with Google’s tags through Consent Mode. Someone can pass while having no idea that names or phone numbers should never be sent into GA4.
Looker Studio. Looker Studio (Google’s free dashboard tool, formerly Data Studio) is how most owners actually see their numbers. It is not part of the certification.
Business judgment. The exam cannot test whether someone knows that a law firm’s enquiry form matters more than its blog’s scroll depth, or that a sudden drop in organic enquiries needs a different question than a drop in traffic. No multiple-choice exam can test that.
When we audited sites for new clients, tracking problems were almost never about GA4 settings a certified person would miss. They were in the tag setup, the form plugin, the WhatsApp button and the consent banner. If those layers on your own site need attention, our technical SEO service covers the site-side issues that commonly break measurement.
The table below sets out what a google analytics certification can and cannot show, next to the practical skill you actually need from a hire, and how to check each one.
| Skill area | Does the certification test it? | What practical competence looks like | How to check in an interview |
|---|---|---|---|
| GA4 terms (users, sessions, events, key events) | Yes, well | Uses the terms correctly without notes | Ask them to explain engagement rate in plain English |
| Property and data stream setup | Yes, conceptually | Has created and configured a property for a real site | Ask what they change on day one of a new property |
| Marking enquiries as key events | Partly | Knows which actions to star and why, and tests them | Ask how they would track your form, WhatsApp and calls |
| Google Tag Manager triggers and tags | Barely | Has built click and form triggers and debugged them | Ask them to describe preview mode and what they look for |
| Consent banners and PDPA | No | Knows what not to send into GA4 and how consent affects data | Ask what happens to your numbers after a cookie banner goes live |
| Looker Studio reporting | No | Builds a one-page owner report from GA4 | Ask for a sample report with client data removed |
| Data quality (internal traffic, duplicate tags) | Partly | Spots inflated numbers and fixes the cause | Ask how they would know if a page view is counted twice |
| Business judgment | No | Connects numbers to enquiries, sales and decisions | Ask what one metric they would report to you monthly, and why |
The pattern is clear. The certificate covers the top of the table well and the bottom of it not at all. The bottom rows are the ones that decide whether your monthly report tells you where enquiries come from.
Most hiring managers will tell you a certificate is a safe minimum requirement for a marketing role. That frequently backfires, because it becomes the only analytics check in the process. A candidate passes the CV screen on the badge, nobody asks a practical question, and six months later the company still cannot say which pages bring in customers. The certificate should open the conversation, not close it.
Certificates are easy to claim and, as a PDF, easy to edit. Fortunately, verification is quick.
Ask for the shareable link, not a screenshot. Inside Skillshop, a certified person can open their activities, go to the certifications tab and copy a unique link for each certificate. Skillshop’s help pages describe this as a shareable link that lets anyone view the certificate. A real holder can produce it in under a minute.
Check three details on the page. Look at the name (does it match the CV?), the certification title (is it Google Analytics, not a different Skillshop product such as a Google Ads certification?), and the expiry date. An expired certificate is not worthless, but it tells you the holder has not sat the current version.
Do not rely on a PDF. A downloaded certificate can be altered with basic editing software. If someone can only send a PDF, ask for the link instead.
Do not expect Skillshop to verify for you. Skillshop’s own FAQ says it does not offer employers a way to look up a user’s certification status, and recommends contacting the person directly. In practice, that means the shareable link is your verification route.
Ask when they last renewed. A candidate who passed once, years ago, and has let it lapse may still be capable. A candidate who renews each year is showing a habit of keeping current. Neither answer is disqualifying; the follow-up questions in the next section decide it.
For freelancers, the same rule applies. A badge image on a profile is a picture. The link is evidence. In our experience, genuine holders are happy to share it, and hesitation is worth noting. If you are a small team hiring your first marketer and want to understand the wider scope of what they will manage, our small business SEO page explains the search work that usually sits alongside measurement.
This is the part of the hiring process that matters most. The best approach is to ask the candidate to share their screen and walk through a real GA4 property, either one they manage (with client data hidden) or Google’s free demo account. Then ask how they would track your enquiries. Here are the questions we would use, and what a strong answer sounds like.
1. “Our customers contact us through a form, WhatsApp and phone calls. How would you track each one?” A strong answer separates the three. For forms, they mention a confirmed submission or a thank-you page rather than a form start. For WhatsApp, they mention a dedicated event for clicks on WhatsApp links, usually via GTM. For calls, they mention tracking taps on phone links. Then they say they would mark those as key events and test each one themselves.
2. “How would you check the tracking actually works?” Look for the Realtime report, GA4’s DebugView, or GTM’s preview mode. A candidate who has never tested a tag usually goes vague here.
3. “Show me which channel brought the most enquiries last month.” They should open Traffic acquisition, add the key events column and filter it to one event. If they only talk about sessions, they are reading traffic, not enquiries.
4. “What would you change on day one in a new property?” Good answers include filtering internal traffic, setting data retention to 14 months, linking Search Console, and checking for duplicate tags.
5. “We are adding a cookie banner. What happens to our numbers?” A thoughtful answer says reported numbers may fall as some visitors decline, explains Consent Mode in simple terms, and says personal data such as names or phone numbers should never go into GA4.
6. “What one number would you report to me every month?” The best candidates pick something tied to enquiries, not total users, and explain why.
7. “Tell me about a time the data was wrong.” Real practitioners have stories about double-counted forms or broken buttons. Someone who has only studied for the exam rarely does.
In our experience, practical skill shows up quickly once someone shares a screen: people who have built tracking talk about testing and edge cases, while people who have only studied talk about menus. The walkthrough is the test; the certificate is the entry ticket. If the role also covers your Google Business Profile and Maps enquiries, our local SEO page explains how that side of search works.
In Singapore, the google analytics certification shows up most often in three places, and each needs a slightly different reading.
Job ads. Many marketing executive and digital marketing roles advertised on MyCareersFuture and other job portals list “Google Analytics certified” as a requirement or a bonus. That is fine as a filter, but write the job ad around the outcome you want, such as “set up and maintain enquiry tracking on our website and report monthly”, rather than only the badge. You will attract candidates who have actually done the work, and you can use the practical test above to confirm it.
Freelancers. Freelancers on marketplaces and through referrals often list the certification alongside Google Ads and other badges. For a short project, such as fixing tracking on a website, ask for one example of a property they set up and the key events they configured. Agree in writing that your company owns the GA4 property and the freelancer is added as a user, so you do not lose access when the project ends.
Agencies. Agencies may mention certified staff in proposals. Ask who will actually work on your account and whether that person holds a current certificate. More importantly, ask how the agency will report enquiries, not just traffic. The Singapore SEO Agency homepage, for example, sets out that we focus only on SEO, which is the kind of scope statement worth checking before you compare proposals.
Juniors and fresh graduates. Polytechnic and university graduates sometimes complete the certificate as part of coursework. For entry-level roles, that is a positive sign of initiative. Pair it with a simple paid trial task on a test property rather than expecting production-ready tracking from day one.
A practical note on cost: because the certificate is free, it should not justify a salary premium on its own. Pay for demonstrated skill in the practical test. If you are weighing an in-house hire against outside support for search work, our pricing page shows how ongoing SEO engagements are structured so you can compare like with like.
A certificate teaches what GA4 can count. A real business shows what it should count. Our law firm SEO case study is a useful reference because its headline result is enquiries, not visits.
The client was a general practice law firm (4 solicitors) in Tanjong Pagar, Singapore, and the engagement ran for 7 months. The page does not describe the firm’s analytics tools or tracking setup, so we make no claim about how its numbers were recorded. What it does show is which numbers mattered.
The starting position. The firm had a single “Practice Areas” page listing all six areas, no blog and an unclaimed Google Business Profile (GBP, the free listing that appears in Google Maps). It had 240 monthly organic visitors, 2 keywords ranking on page 1, 3 GBP reviews, an average time on site of 58 seconds, and 2 monthly enquiries from organic search.
What the programme did. The page sets out five phases: practice area page architecture with six dedicated pages, a legal content strategy of 16 articles, local SEO including the GBP and a review process, a technical audit, and link building from legal-adjacent sources.
The ending position at Month 7. Monthly organic visitors rose from 240 to 691 (+188%). Keywords ranking on page 1 went from 2 to 19. GBP reviews grew from 3 to 27. Average time on site went from 58 seconds to 2m 18s. Monthly organic enquiries went from 2 to 20, an increase of +18 / month. The page notes that during months 3-4, enquiries moved from 2 to 9 per month. The results came from the whole programme across all five phases, not from any single tactic and not from analytics.
What this means for hiring. To report a result like this, measurement has to capture enquiries by channel, separating organic search from other sources. For a firm with six practice areas (corporate law, employment law, family law, conveyancing, civil litigation, and wills and probate), it also helps to know which practice area page each enquiry started from, because that tells the partners where the work is coming from. And because legal searches trigger strong map results, enquiries from the GBP listing are part of the picture too. None of that is tested by the certification exam. All of it should come up in a good candidate’s walkthrough. Law firms considering similar work can see how it is scoped on our law firm SEO page.
For candidates, the exam is very passable with a few focused sessions. Here is a sensible approach.
1. Complete the GA4 learning path on Skillshop first. The exam is written around Google’s own material, so this is the most direct preparation. It is free and self-paced.
2. Practise in a real property. Use Google’s demo account, which gives access to sample data, or better, a property on your own site or a small personal project. Clicking through reports yourself makes questions about where things live far easier.
3. Learn the vocabulary precisely. Many questions turn on exact meanings: key event versus conversion, user versus session, event versus parameter, data stream versus property. Make a short glossary as you go.
4. Know the settings that people forget. Data retention options, internal traffic filters, linking Search Console and Google Ads, audience building and attribution settings all appear in GA4’s admin area and are fair game.
5. Watch the clock, but do not rush. With roughly 50 questions in 75 minutes, you have time to read each question twice. Flag hard ones and come back.
6. If you fail, read the gaps and wait a day. Skillshop requires a 24-hour wait before a retake. Use it to review the topics you were unsure of rather than just trying again.
7. Put a renewal reminder in your calendar. The certificate lasts a year. Renewing keeps your knowledge in step with interface changes, and employers notice a current expiry date.
Then do the part the exam does not cover: set up tracking for a form, a WhatsApp button and a phone link, build a one-page Looker Studio report, and be ready to show it. That combination is what makes the certificate credible in an interview. If you want to see how measurement fits into broader search results for Singapore businesses, our case studies page collects all of them in one place.
Field notes: In our law firm SEO case study, a general practice law firm (4 solicitors) in Tanjong Pagar went from 2 to 20 monthly organic enquiries over 7 months, while monthly organic visitors went from 240 to 691, a +188% change. The page tracks progress by enquiries at each stage, noting that enquiries moved from 2 to 9 per month during months 3-4. That is the kind of number a hire should be able to report, and it is exactly what the certification exam does not ask anyone to set up.
The google analytics certification is a useful baseline literacy filter. It tells you a candidate understands GA4’s vocabulary and has spent focused time with Google’s own material, and a current expiry date shows they have kept up. It is not evidence that someone can set up measurement for your business. Tag Manager, consent, Looker Studio and, above all, knowing which numbers matter to an owner sit outside the exam.
So keep the certificate in your job ad, verify it with the shareable link, and then ask every shortlisted candidate to walk through a real GA4 property and explain exactly how they would track your form, WhatsApp and phone enquiries. That ten-minute conversation will tell you more than the badge. If you want to understand how we approach search work for Singapore businesses, our about page explains how we work.
It is Google’s official online assessment for Google Analytics 4, hosted on Skillshop, Google’s free training platform. Passing it shows that someone understands GA4’s concepts, such as events, key events, reports, audiences and attribution. It replaced the older Google Analytics Individual Qualification, which covered the retired Universal Analytics. It is a knowledge test, not a practical assessment, so it does not show whether someone can set up tracking on a real business website.
Yes. Skillshop states that it is available at no cost, and that includes both the GA4 training path and the certification exam. There is no fee to sit or retake it. For employers, this means the certificate should not justify a higher salary by itself. Its value is as a basic literacy check, and you should judge practical skill separately through a walkthrough of a real GA4 property.
At the time of writing, the exam is widely reported as 50 multiple-choice questions with a 75-minute time limit. Skillshop’s help pages say most assessments require a score of 80% or greater to pass. Google can change the format at any time, so candidates should check the current details on the assessment page in Skillshop before starting.
Skillshop certifications are valid for one year from the date they are earned, unless the certificate states otherwise. After that, the holder needs to pass the current version of the exam again to stay certified. Skillshop opens recertification in a window before the expiry date. When hiring, check the expiry date on the certificate link, as a current certificate shows the candidate has sat the latest version.
You can retake it. Skillshop does not limit the number of attempts, but you must wait 24 hours after a failed attempt before trying again. Use that time to review the topics you found difficult in the GA4 learning path and practise in Google’s demo account or your own property, rather than simply retaking the exam straight away.
Ask for the unique shareable link to the certificate, which the holder can copy from the certifications tab in their Skillshop activities. Open it and check the name, the certification title and the expiry date. Avoid relying on a PDF or a badge image, as both can be edited. Skillshop’s FAQ says it does not provide a way for companies to look up a user’s status, so the link is the practical verification route.
Only lightly at most. The exam focuses on GA4’s own features, such as properties, events, reports and integrations. Google Tag Manager, which is how most businesses track clicks, form submissions and WhatsApp taps, is a separate skill. If you need someone to set up or fix tracking, ask them directly about building triggers and testing tags in preview mode, because a certificate alone does not show that.
It is reasonable as a minimum or a nice-to-have for marketing roles, and many Singapore job ads list it. The risk is treating it as the only analytics check. Write the ad around the outcome you need, such as maintaining enquiry tracking and monthly reporting, and use a practical walkthrough of a GA4 property during interviews to confirm the candidate can actually do it.
It depends on experience. Someone who already uses GA4 regularly may only need to review the Skillshop learning path. Someone new to analytics should work through the full path and spend time clicking through Google’s demo account or a real property before sitting the exam. Learning exact terminology, such as the difference between a key event and a conversion, is the most common gap.
Yes, as a low-cost signal. It is free, and studying for it often fills gaps in areas you do not use daily, such as attribution settings or audiences. It also gives employers and clients a quick way to confirm your baseline knowledge. Pair it with evidence of practical work, such as a tracking setup you built or a sample report, because that is what experienced hiring managers will ask to see.
