How to Set Up Google Analytics 4 for Singapore Websites

Quick Answer: To set up Google Analytics 4 for a Singapore website, create a GA4 property, install the tracking code via Google Tag Manager, configure conversion events for key business actions (form submissions, phone clicks, WhatsApp clicks), and link GA4 to Google Search Console. Without these four steps, your GA4 data will be incomplete and you cannot measure SEO impact accurately.

: A Complete Setup Guide

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is the analytics platform Google transitioned to in July 2023, replacing Universal Analytics permanently. All Singapore websites must now use GA4 for website analytics. Yet many Singapore businesses set up GA4 with minimal configuration – tracking page views but not the conversions that connect website visits to business outcomes.

This guide covers the correct GA4 setup for Singapore businesses, including the conversion event configuration that most installations skip.

Step 1: Create a GA4 Property

Go to analytics.google.com and sign in with the Google account associated with your business.

1. Click Admin (gear icon, bottom left) 2. In the Account column, select or create the correct account 3. In the Property column, click “Create Property” 4. Select “Web” as the data stream type 5. Enter your Singapore website URL and stream name 6. Note your Measurement ID (format: G-XXXXXXXXXX) – you will need this for installation

Step 2: Install the GA4 Tracking Code

Method 1 (Recommended): Google Tag Manager If your Singapore website uses GTM (or if you are setting up analytics for the first time, use GTM): 1. In GTM, create a new tag: Google Analytics > GA4 Configuration 2. Enter your Measurement ID 3. Trigger: All Pages 4. Publish the container

Method 2: Direct installation (WordPress) Install the “Site Kit by Google” plugin in WordPress. Sign in with the same Google account, and Site Kit installs GA4 automatically. Also sets up Google Search Console connection.

Method 3: Direct installation (non-WordPress) Paste the GA4 gtag.js snippet into your website’s `` section on every page.

For Singapore e-commerce businesses on Shopify, the Shopify-Google channel app installs GA4 directly with minimal configuration.

Step 3: Configure Conversion Events

This is the step most Singapore businesses skip, and it is critical. Without conversion events, GA4 shows you traffic but cannot tell you whether that traffic is generating leads.

Events to configure for Singapore service businesses:

Contact form submission (most important):

  • In GTM: create a trigger for “Form Submission” on your contact form; create a GA4 event tag (“generate_lead”) firing on that trigger
  • In GA4: mark the event as a conversion

Phone number click:

  • Trigger: “Click – Just Links” matching your phone number href (tel:+65XXXXXXXX)
  • Event name: “phone_click”

WhatsApp link click (critical for Singapore businesses – WhatsApp is a primary contact method):

  • Trigger: “Click – Just Links” matching your WhatsApp link (wa.me or api.whatsapp.com)
  • Event name: “whatsapp_click”

Email link click:

  • Trigger: “Click – Just Links” matching “mailto:”
  • Event name: “email_click”

Mark all four of these as Conversions in GA4 (Admin > Events > toggle the Conversion column).

Step 4: Link GA4 to Google Search Console

Linking GA4 to GSC creates the “Organic Google Search” dimension in GA4, allowing you to see which GSC keyword queries drive traffic and conversions.

1. In GA4 > Admin > Property Settings > Product Links 2. Click “Search Console Links” 3. Choose “Link” and select your GSC property 4. Choose the appropriate web data stream

Once linked, organic search keyword data from GSC appears in GA4 under Reports > Acquisition > Search Console.

A Singapore medical practice had GA4 installed but no conversion events configured. Their monthly SEO report showed 1,800 organic visits with zero measurable leads. After configuring form submission, phone click, and WhatsApp click events as conversions, the same 1,800 visits revealed 67 monthly leads from organic – 42 WhatsApp initiations, 18 contact form submissions, and 7 phone calls. Organic suddenly showed an SGD 3,800/lead average CPL that justified their SEO investment clearly.

In our experience working with Singapore restaurant and F&B clients, the WhatsApp click conversion event is the single most important GA4 configuration for local consumer businesses. WhatsApp is the primary enquiry channel for Singapore F&B reservations, delivery orders, and event bookings – yet it is consistently the conversion event most often missing from GA4 setups when we audit new clients. Without WhatsApp click tracking, a Singapore restaurant cannot attribute any WhatsApp-originated bookings to organic search, making organic SEO appear to generate no leads when it may in fact be generating 30-50 qualified customer contacts per month.

In GA4 setup reviews for Singapore restaurant and cafe businesses, the most valuable conversion event to configure is consistently the table booking link click or reservation widget interaction – the actions that directly convert a Google visitor to a dining customer. Most F&B websites track page views but not these critical bottom-of-funnel interactions. Without booking click tracking, a restaurant cannot measure whether SEO investment is driving reservations or just casual browsing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Google Analytics 4 free for Singapore websites?

Yes. GA4 standard is completely free for all Singapore websites. Google Analytics 360 (paid enterprise version) exists but is only relevant for very high-traffic sites. The standard free GA4 version covers everything a Singapore SME needs.

Do I need Google Tag Manager to set up GA4 for my Singapore website?

Google Tag Manager is recommended but not required. GTM makes conversion event configuration significantly easier (especially for form submissions, phone clicks, and WhatsApp clicks) and allows future tracking changes without code deployment. For Singapore WordPress sites, Site Kit by Google provides a simple direct installation. For non-technical Singapore business owners, Site Kit is the easiest setup path.

How do I know if GA4 is working correctly on my Singapore website?

In GA4, go to Reports > Realtime. Open your website in a new browser tab and watch for your visit to appear in real-time. If your own visit shows up, the tracking is working. Also check the Admin > Data Streams section to confirm your website data stream shows recent traffic.

What is the difference between GA4 sessions and events for Singapore website tracking?

Sessions are a count of visits to your website – each visit is one session. Events are specific interactions within a session (page views, clicks, form submissions, scrolls). GA4 is event-based, meaning everything – including page views – is tracked as an event. This makes conversion tracking more flexible and granular than Universal Analytics was.

How do I set up goals in Google Analytics 4 for my Singapore website?

GA4 uses “conversions” instead of “goals.” Go to Admin > Events, find the event you want to mark as a conversion (e.g., “generate_lead”), and toggle the “Mark as conversion” switch. The event will then appear in your Conversions reporting. If the event does not exist yet, create it via GTM or via GA4’s custom event creation (Admin > Events > Create Event).

Can I track e-commerce purchases in GA4 for a Singapore online store?

Yes. GA4 has built-in e-commerce tracking support. For Shopify, the Google channel app enables e-commerce tracking automatically. For WooCommerce, install a dedicated plugin (DuracellTomi’s Google Tag Manager for WordPress with e-commerce support). E-commerce tracking in GA4 provides revenue attribution by channel, product performance, and funnel visualisation.

How long does it take for GA4 to show data after installation for a Singapore website?

Real-time data appears immediately in the Realtime report. Standard reports (Acquisition, Engagement) show processed data within 24-48 hours. Older data (from before GA4 installation) is not retroactively available – GA4 only shows data from your installation date onwards.

Should my Singapore website use both GA4 and Google Search Console?

Yes, and you should link them together. GA4 tracks on-site behaviour (sessions, conversions, engagement time, device type). GSC tracks pre-click search performance (impressions, click-through rate, keyword queries, positions). Together they give you the complete picture from Google search impression to on-site conversion.

Accurate GA4 data is the foundation of any evidence-based SEO engagement. Our technical SEO service includes GA4 audit and configuration as part of the setup phase. Small business SEO clients often find that correcting analytics setup is the first step that makes everything else measurable. See our SEO services overview for how we structure analytics into every engagement.

Singapore SEO Agency sets up GA4 with full conversion event tracking for every new client – ensuring you can measure SEO results in business terms from day one. Ask our team about analytics setup as part of your SEO onboarding.
